How is the As 2 Become 3 course different from other antenatal programmes?

The content focuses more on the relational, emotional and psychological changes the couple will have to go through, as opposed to the medical aspects of the birth. Therefore, it complements well with, and adds to what is offered through hospitals and other forums like NCT. The course is acts as a catalyst to a couple becoming a family. It covers what will happen post-birth, and how to prepare and be ready for all the changes ahead. The course is run by a couple who have been together for over 25 years and have four children of their own. Jess is a senior midwife who manages the Birth Centre of one of the UK's top maternity hospital, and Bob is qualified in education and training. Bob's male perspective is very important for all the new dads-to-be. There is a special focus on New Dads which helps to redress the emphasis usually put on women during this pregnancy phase. By the end of the day, men are better able to see their role during the pregnancy and the first few months after the birth, and are equipped to be the best father they can possibly be. The course is run in an informal, interactive workshop style with each couple working through issues together with the use of a comprehensive handbook that can be used again later. There is follow-up work that they will usually need to do in their own time together after the course. All topics are covered in one day on a Saturday. This is more manageable than attending a series of sessions, which can be demanding physically for pregnant women, and sometime difficult for both partners to attend due to other commitments if sessions are run during the week. The cost of the course is subsidised by over 75% to make it affordable and available to all couples expecting their first child. The course is extreme value for money, and is able to be made so only by our generous supporters who believe in the importance of building strong families for the future.

What others have said:

“The course helped me to face up to the reality of become a dad for the first time, and gave me the confidence I needed to step into this new role. It was also reassuring to know that other dads-to-be were as petrified as I was!”

Adam, course attendee

“This course helps to increase awareness of the many changes first-time parents are likely to experience. It covers important aspects of relationships and emotions, areas which most antenatal classes do not address. Highly recommended.”

Marjaana Vanska, NHS Active Birth Teacher
